Reading is an essential component of all subject areas so why not make it a visible component as well? To instill in students an awareness of the importance of reading, classrooms can provide an environment in which reading is clearly valued. This initiative can be used to create a classroom reading corner with shelves that have books on a variety of topics, targeting a range of reading levels and provide a wide range of genres, both fiction and non-fiction, including such reference books as dictionaries, thesauruses, and encyclopedias etc. Bean bags could also be a feature of the classroom reading corner.

Instructions

• The funding is available for schools to create a classroom reading corner with shelves that have books on a variety of topics, written at a range of reading levels and provide a wide range of genres.
• Beanbags could also be a feature of the classroom reading corner. Other suggestions, reading corner activities and details are enclosed.
• Please enclose in your evaluation a detailed description of the activities undertaken in the running of the initiative along with any relevant photographs of the activities undertaken. We would be very grateful if the photos are sent to us digitally as the quality is great for publications. Please make sure that you have sought permission from parents/guardians to use the photos in publications. Some schools write to all parents asking them to make contact with the school if they object to photos being published.
