Course Aims
Format: Exploration of key concepts, demonstrations, questions and answers and the opportunity to carry out simple but important experiments.

Aims: To facilitate the clarification of fundamental concepts, to illustrate their applications in real situations and to explore how they might be taught.

Questions: Does light always travel in straight lines? What is light?
Newton was not the first to see a spectrum. What was different in his observations and conclusions?
Is there an easy way to show how the speed of light in different media determines the angle of refraction?
How do lenses and mirrors form images?
How do we know that light is an electromagnetic phenomenon?
How do we perceive colour?

This illustrated lecture will deal with these and many other questions. Many optical phenomena will be demonstrated and participants will have the opportunity to experiment and clarify their ideas.
