Teaching About the Human Defence System

Target Group
Biology and Transition Year Biology teachers.
Course Aims
In collaboration with the National Centre for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching and Learning (NCE-MSTL).

Participants who complete this course should be able to

• Use new and innovative teaching methodologies to teach the topic of immunology.
• Use the resource pack (including activities, worksheets, teaching resources and multimedia package) distributed to make the teaching of the immune system and immunity more exciting, and easier to teach and learn.
• Develop a knowledge and an understanding in immunology, the spread and control of diseases.
• Discuss and reflect on their own teaching and share experiences and useful resources with colleagues on the teaching the human defence system.

This in-service will answer the requests from teachers in providing tried and tested ways of explaining difficult theory and contemporary issues in biology. The in-service also aims to improve teachers’ knowledge of careers in biology. All in-services will include material which is applicable and can be directly related to many different areas of the leaving certificate biology syllabus.

This in-service will include the provision of a resource pack including activities, worksheets, teaching resources and multimedia package (video clips and power-point presentations) which teachers can use to teach the immune system and immunity. It can also be used as a Transition Year Biology Module.
