British withdrawal from India, 1945-1947 - helping students to think critically

Target Group
Teachers of Leaving Certificate History (later modern field of study), for whose students the topic prescribed for documents-based study in the 2012 and 2013 examinations is “European retreat from empire and the aftermath, 1945-1990”. One of the three case studies for the topic is British withdrawal from India, 1945-1947.
Course Aims
The course aims to assist teachers in preparing their students for the demands of the documents-based question on the prescribed topic. The approach will reflect the syllabus focus on enquiry and evidence and will explore some of the means by which critical thinking skills are developed in the history classroom. It will explore the application to the case study of two approaches discussed in the Guidelines for Teachers viz. the enquiry-focused approach and the multi-perspective approach.
