Junior Science is a partner in the EU ITEMS project with the EU Schoolnet and other professional development groups and schools. The project aims to assist teachers teach difficult topics in science and maths. The emphasis is on student learning and inquiry. The programme adapts many of the resources produced by the Institute of Physics (IOP) and others for use in Junior Science. Teachers are asked to commit to two evening sessions over a six month period, to implement some changes in how they teach these topics and to use a private online area with students. The first session will assist teachers to trial recommended student activities, use their supporting web resource and plan the second session.
The project provides each teacher with a private online area in which animations, video and pictures are integrated into tests for their own students. Student grades will be available to teachers automatically. Teachers may either participate in online forum discussions and other interactions with students OR let the project manage all work OR use it simply as a way to assess students automatically. The project uses a professionally operated secure online environment.
The student assessments will be developed based on student activities in class. It is highly recommended that some of the learning activities be implemented with students. Further courses will be made available as they are produced. It is hoped to develop interaction among all participants. Feedback will be encouraged and will help form future work.
